Mayroyd is an area of Hebden Bridge with a rich history. It was once home to the most important corn mill in Hebden Bridge which dated from the 1500s. The opening of the canal in 1804 strengthened the area's industrial pre-eminence. Mayroyd Mill, built as a canal-side sawmill at this time was important in the supply of timber to the area. The mill's cargo doors would have enabled timber to be loaded directly onto the canal boats.
200 years on, Mayroyd Mill has been re-invigorated and is vibrant once more. The mill has been restored and re-modelled to suit 21 st century living, whilst retaining many of its original mill features. The easterly part of the mill incorporates the original lock-keeper's cottage which was once a detached building. Built at the same time as the canal, it is the oldest part of the mill. Set in stunning surroundings, this once industrious sawmill has new life as ten unique homes.
